Guardians of Us

Guardians of Us explores a perennial philosophy about the nature of being, bordering myth and the relative world. Where the literal and the illusory collaborate. Where fact and fiction are obscure.

A personal spirituality reveals itself as a process of remembering and forgetting. It is not singular it is a collective which navigates cycles drawing on memory and the feeling of others while accessing ones own depth of experience. Where we distinguish between learned behavior and the subtle layers of our intrinsic nature.

Guardians of Us personifies the nature of instinct, desire, metamorphosis and clairvoyance. They are the witness to the simultaneous interaction between creation and destruction. Some are peaceful and some are wrathful. They cross reference animal to human, a hybrid representing the sacred feminine and the double edge sword between courage and vulnerability; what may appear a state of weakness in actuality is a state of power and transcendence. Wisdom, ritual and the sacred is relative to perception and is such described as experiential.

How Far is Now

Together we stand on fragile ground, influenced by pressing technologies and unresolved histories. How Far is Now looks at a deeper understanding of both race and ecology and the tenuous nature of change, addressing the cross roads between environmental crisis and social identities, where the human story is not separate from any other living story.

Here there is a sense of longing for a simpler more natural world, where we begin to redefine what is meaningful in our lives, to re-establish an intimacy with each other and our surrounding world.

Meaning is implied through layering various textiles to form a tapestry through pattern as a merging of cultural archetypes. The elements of wind interacts with the fabric, (as subject) as a metaphor to bring forth change both socially and environmentally.

This work does not aim to imply tension between race rather a surrender to our differences in how we choose to live our lives, for example the tribal verse the conventional, the rural verse cosmopolitan.

There is a fine line between what we perceive as factual and what we perceive as fictitious, by combining photomontage with collage textiles and paint there is a merging of photo literal with mythical surrealism. In an allegorical context we become seduced by this intangible ethereal world which honors the presence of the divine feminine and the union of opposites; processing both strength and vulnerability, connection and displacement and the necessary interdependence between the spiritual and the material. One does not exist without the other.

The necessary interdependence between naturally occurring fires and the fynbos plant kingdom is a deceiving symbiosis that is essential to the survival of this geologically unique ecosystem. What may appear catastrophic is in fact essential to its cyclical rejuvenation.

Reciprocity

This body of work reveals a place of forgiveness where the human story is not separate from any other living story. Figures adorned in blue and white fabrics represent river system as the metaphor to bring forth change by way of current and momentum. Other paintings in this series speak of drought and action towards protecting vulnerable ecosystems.

Marble Landscapes

2015

I find a necessary quiet in the stillness of cemeteries. There is an odd symmetrical beauty that I return too, and an odd feeling that you are alone when so many are there.
I began photographing the head stones, taking a particular interest in the older ones, how the white marble weathered over time; the cracks, the oxidation, the growth of lichen and moss interacting on the stone.
When I looked closer I could see an abstract landscape. With applied layers of oil paint and wax over the photographs, a landscape is revealed. With keeping the natural textures visible, these paintings are loose and imperfect like a sketch.

A reconstructed portrait in response to loss

Having lost my father unexpectedly, I needed somewhere to place my grief. I started to take objects apart. As I was coming undone, it felt quite natural to disassemble things. Through this process I found myself reliving a relationship that I had both known and not known. I had to deconstruct in order to reconstruct myself.

Moving through this unknown territory of emotion, I began to put these various shapes back together in a new way. These assemblages became a intuitive platform to access my grief; transforming the depth of loss into a 3-Dimensional format of acceptance.

These composite pieces are made from deconstructed tables, chairs, tools, clocks, farming implements, cloths, and and little gifts my father bestowed upon me over the years.

Scraps of lace convey the fragility of the feminine, old keys, hinges, and door knobs, are archetypes of opening and closing, thread dangles like delicate pendulums representing the tenuous nature of change. Old photographs of bridges represent crossing over to the other side. Buttons are used in relation to connecting two things together, providing closure.

Altar memorializes the sacred. It addresses a fundamental question of how do we gain from that which we have lost? Where did we start and how do we arrive?

Incomplete Story

2012

The incomplete story is a personal story. A series of portraits exploring the nature of duality and transition. A sequence in time in the states of consciousness between absolution, cause and effect, action and reaction and perhaps a momentary lapse in time. Where the ego dissolves and the attachment to people, places and things cease and one exists in a true state of being. The constant in nature suggests the grounding place from which I experience truth and understanding most completely.

The true self is that which is constant, spirituality is our own, there is no path to follow. I feel there is nothing certain, finished or complete about the nature of existence. It is vast impermanent and forever changing. I exist somewhere between here, there and nowhere.

There is a fine line between fact and fiction in photography. The factual because of its inherent realist quality the fictitious because of how we choose to arrange the image, thus distorting the translation of the story. The combination of these two paradigms allows for a mysterious reality. I leave the rest to the interpretation of the viewer.
